Blurb/Synopsis:
Deamhan have survived by remaining hidden in the shadows.
Ramanga, Lamia, Metusba, and Lugat have been overshadowed by what humans know
as the modern vampire. But what if vampires aren't the real threat?
One woman's search for her mother who disappeared without a
trace on the streets of Minneapolis takes her into the precarious world of Deamhan,
psychic vampires who rule the underground nightlife in the city's most darkest
corners.
She gains the trust of the only other human familiar with
the Deamhan lifestyle. With his help she finds not only can the Deamhan not be
trusted but it’s her own father, president of a ruthless organization of
researchers, who has diabolically maintained that distrust.
“Did she kill him?”
Hallie stopped and looked over her shoulder. “I’ll show ya.”
Veronica followed her down the hallway and down the stairs.
They crept past Nathan, who sat in his study, reading, and then headed to a
wooden door in the hallway near the back door of the manor.
“She’s down there with him.” Hallie smiled.
“He’s still alive?”
“If you want to call it that.” Hallie hesitated. “I used to
go down there during the day when Anastasia’s asleep.”
The tiny hairs on the back of Veronica’s neck stood up
followed by a small gust of wind and the smell of expensive cologne. She immediately
turned around and jumped, bumping against the door and creating a loud thud.
Remy stood with his brown eyes scanning her.
“Now, now Veronica,” he said as he leaned against the wall.
“That would be prying.”
This time she forced herself to not back away. Unlike their
first encounter, Remy’s appearance wasn’t intimidating. Dressed in a sleek
black shirt with tight fitting blue jeans, he towered slightly over her. His
brown hair was pulled back into a ponytail, just like the last time she saw him.
“Shouldn’t you be doing something angst related right now?”
Remy questioned Hallie.
She held out her hand. “Where’s my cigs?”
Remy looked at Veronica and smiled. His eyes were hollow
giving her mixed signals. “Kids these days.” He reached into the pockets of his
jeans and pulled out an unopened pack of cigarettes. “Always want, want, want,
but never give, give, give.”
Hallie snatched the pack from his grasp.
“I don’t know why you smoke. It does nothing for us.”
“Because I want to.”
“Off you go.” He patted Hallie on her head. “Move along
now.”
She gave him an evil eye before heading back up the stairs.
Remy leaned against the wall, continuing to gawk at
Veronica. It made her uneasy and she looked away. She tried her best to ignore
his intimidating and somewhat attractive stare by hiding her thoughts.
He smiled. “What can I say? I’m good with kids.”
She brushed off his remark and she began to fidget with the
knob handle on the basement door.
“She’s been playing with Murphy for about a week now,” he
continued. “She’s trying to get into that little brain of his. Gotta give that
human credit; he’s stronger than he looks.”
Veronica tried pushing her weight against the door but it
didn’t budge. “So, Miss Austin. We never did finish that conversation.”
“What conversation?”
“Oh you know. The one where you blocked your thoughts, then
ran off at the sight of me feeding.” He pouted. “You didn’t even say goodbye.”
“Look, I’m not some whore who’ll fall for your tricks.” She
faced him with her back to the door. “I know who you are and what you can do,
so don’t try to insult my intelligence.”
In Deamhan speed, he placed his hand on the door near her
head. “And that’s why you fascinate me. You’re like no other researcher I’ve
ever encountered. Plus you smell so good.”
“I’m not a researcher.”

Tell us a little
about the book and where did you get the idea to write this story.
Believe it or not the story came to me back in 1999 when I
was working at a comic book store/ porno shop in Minneapolis. I was (and still
am) an avid reader of paranormal novels. I loved reading about vampires,
werewolves, and witches but when it came to vampires, I started to wonder why I
couldn’t find a novel about psychic vampires. Every author seemed to write
about sanguine vampires so I decided if I couldn’t find one I should write one.
Unfortunately I had to put that idea on hold. I joined the
military shortly after and went to school. During that time I wrote character
profiles and the plot but I didn’t have the time to actually sit down and write
it until 2008.
How and when did you get started writing novels?
I wrote my first short story in 5th grade. I
still have it! It’s called ‘Runaway Toilet on Jackson Street.’ It was about a
toilet that came to life and two kids had to figure out a way to capture it and
return it to the bathroom. Sounds silly, but I was so proud of that story. I
still am!
I wrote my first novel in 7th grade. Sadly, I
can’t find it and I don’t remember the name of it.
I wrote my second novel in 8th grade and I still
have that. It’s called “Wolves of Evil.” It’s about a family of werewolves who
move next door to a girl and her family. Shortly after the girl finds out that
her father is a werewolf hunter. I’ve thought about revising it (Lord knows, it
needs some deep revision) and releasing it but I haven’t got around to doing
so.
What’s the best and worst part of being a writer?
Being able to create your own worlds and putting it out
there for others to enjoy it, is the best part of being a writer.
The worst part is having numerous ideas pop in my head at
the same time, especially if they all sound good. I want to write them all and
at the same time! Sometimes I see it as a gift and also annoying, but I can’t
complain. I’d rather have ideas than have none at all.
What is your writing schedule like?
Since I also work a full time job, I write from 6pm to 10pm
during the weekdays and 9am to 3 pm on the weekends.
Where do you get your ideas?
Some come easy to me and out of nowhere. I have a recording
app on my phone just in case I’m out of range from a piece of paper and a pen
or if it’s in the middle of the night and I just had that awesome dream.
Other times, I feel that I have to literally dig the idea
out of my brain by force. That’s usually unpleasant to say the least.
Is there something about you or your life that readers might
be surprised about?
Do you write a novel straight through? Or revise as you
go? Plan a whole series in advance? Or does the series evolve?
I do a mixture of all. Sometimes I can write a novel
straight through and other times I stop, go back, and start again from the
beginning, revising as I go.
As for The Deamhan Chronicles, I knew where I wanted to go
for the first three books, the novellas, and The Brotherhood Files. However,
this changed the further I fell into the story and I realized that it was going
to take more than just what I have to write what I needed to be written.
Do you use Beta readers?
It was hard to find beta readers for the first two books.
Now, I do use beta readers. They are essential and to me, severely underrated
as a necessity because they’re so important.
What’s next after the Deamhan Series/Books/World?
I’ve already written the first book in another series, young
adult and unattached to The Deamhan Chronicles, which I would like to expand
into a four book series.
Also, there is much more to explore in the Deamhan universe,
including the world of vampires. They are just as important in my books as
Deamhan.
