In matters of the heart, there’s no such thing as business as usual.

Brandon Wilson, the ink on his degree barely dry, needs a job, and his mother helps him get one as Mr. Stepford’s assistant. Thomas doesn’t seem to remember, but Brandon worked mowing the stunningly attractive older man’s lawn years ago. Thomas was Brandon’s teenage fantasy, and now he’s Brandon’s boss.
Thomas and Brandon are both determined to keep their relationship strictly business, but the old attraction is still there. They learn to work together even as the tension between them reaches the boiling point. But just as they start to surrender, Thomas’s old life in New York calls him. Even if he resists that pull, can their newfound relationship survive when Brandon receives the call of his dreams... from Hollywood?

Take your character Thomas Stepford and break his character down for us using the below to help us better understand him and connect with him. All of us readers like to see the characters authors create come to life this will help us to connect more.

FIND THEIR ATTITUDE.
Thomas is a very realistic kind of guy.  He has spent years building a successful business. Thomas doesn’t generally deal in wishes or fantasy.

FIND THEIR HAPPY PLACE.
This comes to the heart of the story.  Because Thomas’s happy place for a very long time was his work.  He thrived on it.  But things changed and when his parents needed him and his health was threatened, he realized he needed to cut back and that meant finding something… or someone to make him happy.

FIND THEIR SUPPORT.
Thomas is a very independent, self made person.  He didn’t think he needed support, so he didn’t have a wide circle of friends, mostly associates.  But when Thomas decided to make changes in his life, he received support from his new assistant in ways he never expected.

FIND THEIR GUT.
Thomas has decided to move to Colorado to be near his parents and family because they need him.  He’s also been working himself to dearth and he needs to cut back.  He’s resistant at first because that sort of change is hard to make.  In his search for an assistant in Colorado, he encounters the young men who used to fuel his wild imagination.  Thomas must find his gut to hire him in the first place and then later, when Brandon gets the opportunity of a lifetime, Thomas must decide if he’s willing to make the move yet again.

FIND THEIR BANE.

Everyone has their breaking point. Showing readers what it takes to push your character to this point will make your character's journey all the more momentous.
Thomas’s bane is change,  he can deal with all the upheaval the business world has to throw at him, but personal change is a completely different matter.

FIND THEIR REFUGE.
When all seems lost, a safe haven can keep hope alive for your character. Allow your character to find this refuge when they most need it, so they can receive the respite they need to recharge for your story's climax.
What Thomas doesn’t expect is to find that Brandon is his refuge.  He’s the person who makes him feel whole after years of business making up the bulk of his life.

FIND THEIR REDEMPTION.
Your character will screw up. They will make decisions that harm themselves or others. They will fail. It's how they make things right that will define who they are at heart.

Thomas realizes after Brandon has left to pursue his lifelong dream, that there is room for him in Brandon’s life and that if Thomas move heaven and earth, himself, his parents, and the defacto headquarters for his business, he might be able to have everything he ever wanted.
