One Eight Seven by: H.L. LeRoy w/ Review

Title: One Eight Seven
Author: H.L. LeRoy
Series: A LT. Jack Daniels/Jillian Varela Mystery (A loosely tied together series. But any of the stories can be read as a standalone.)
Genre: Thriller/Mystery
Publisher: Kindle Worlds
Release Date: Mar 2, 2015
Edition/Formats Available In: eBook
Rating: 5 Chalices
Blurb/Synopsis:
Lt. “Jack” Daniels’ mom doesn’t just enjoy guilt trips she buys your ticket, packs your bag, and stamps your passport. Now she has Jack reluctantly heading to San Francisco in an effort to solve the murder of a drag queen superstar.
Teamed up with a tough-as-nails local P.I., Jillian Varela, Jack figures it will be an easy case. But what her mom didn’t tell her was that she would be helping a Mafia don with a long list of enemies.
As the bodies begin to stack up, it becomes obvious that Mom’s “simple job” has turned into something both dangerous and deadly.

It was three-fifteen in San Francisco making it five-fifteen p.m. in Chicago. Herb would already be down the stairs and headed to his car. That left one person I could call. My erstwhile partner, Harry McGlade, now a third-rate, bordering on worthless P.I. Besides being a major thorn in my side, Harry had sold a stupid TV series, Fatal Autonomy, with a supporting character based on me. The writer had placed the fictional Jack Daniels on the extreme low end of the stupid scale, and the whole thing had damn near ruined my police career.
I decided that I didn't want to talk to Harry after all, and I started to hang up.
Too late. The phone rang once and he picked up. "Thank God. After the ball gag problem last night, I was worried you wouldn't call me again."
"Harry, it's Jack."
"Jackie! I thought you were my date from last night. She—"
"Stop! I don't want to hear about it."
"Okay. Sure. Hey, I hear you're in San Francisco consorting with drag queens."
I'm going to clobber Herb and his big mouth. "I need you to check out a P.I. for me. Name of Jillian Varela, based in San Jose."
"Give me a second." I heard Harry tapping on his computer.
Harry whistled. "I've got a picture. Get a load of her. She's hot."
There was silence for a few seconds. Silence where Harry was involved was never good.
"Harry? What are you doing?"
"I'm—uh . . ."
"Never mind. Forget I even brought it up."
"Say, can I come out and help you?"
Having Harry come out ranked right up there with removing my eyes with a grapefruit spoon. "No, you can't come out. Tell me her background."
"She's thirty. Her dad and mom escaped from Cuba. They had two daughters, Jillian and Lisa. Jillian joined the Marines, staying two tours as an MP. Um. She became a cop, but only for a couple of years. She quit and opened a gym. She runs her P.I. business out of the back. At least ask her if she needs a partner."
"Background, McGlade."
"She's had success. She solved a child killer cold case. When she caught up to the guy he was trying to snatch a ten year old off the street and she beat the crap out of him before calling the police. Then she got the goods on a skeevy cop taking protection money from an underage prostitute. She also caught a serial killer who'd been active in three states. She fights MMA for fun. She sounds even tougher than you."
Not likely. "That it?"
"When the two of you team up, you'll be Jack and Jillian. That's pretty good, huh?"
"Shut up Harry. Is that it?"
"No. Tell me again why we shouldn't get married."
"We're not the same species?"
"Jackie, you hurt me."
"It'll be okay, Harry. You'll find someone to love, someone who won't turn you in."
"Maybe."
"Goodbye Harry."
"Wait a minute. Tell your blubbery partner I found his mom on the internet. She looks— "
I hung up.
Harry's the guy who asks, "What is that perfume?" right after he farts so everyone takes a deep breath. What an idiot.
I called the number Phil had given me. Jillian answered, directing me to an address on Broadway.
Okay, Jillian Varela. You sound professional, and you've been successful. I'll talk to you, but I'm still going to be on a redeye.

The Secrets of Yashire by: Diamante Lavendar w/ Interview

Title: The Secrets of Yashire; Emerging from the Shadows
Author: Diamante Lavendar
Series: Stand Alone
Genre: YA Fantasy Adventure
Publisher: Shelf Published
Release Date: Jan 9 2014
Edition/Formats Available In: eBook & Print
Blurb/Synopsis:

The Secrets of Yashire: Emerging from the Shadows is a young adult fantasy adventure that occurs within the framework of a young girl's subconscious mind. The main character, Brianna, finds herself thrown into a world called Yashire where she is forced to deal with circumstances that are threatening Yashire's existence.
Against her will, she is sent on a journey to restore unconditional love back to the land while also contending with the evil force in the land, Zolan.
Brianna is sent on her mission by Libban, Keeper of the Land. Along the way, Brianna travels with the mystical tiger, Angelos; a huge, whitish-tan tiger with thick black stripes who sings only the purest songs of love, and the wondrous little one-eyed bird named Abiba. During the journey, Brianna is also preparing to meet her soulmate-the one she longs to be with and the one who will bring complete healing back into her life.
Together they travel through fantastic lands filled with magical creatures that could only exist in the wildest of imaginations. Through her treacherous brushes with danger and heartwarming experiences of love and acceptance, Brianna discovers many things.
It is here, amidst the powers and phantasms of the mind that Brianna receives life lessons and virtues to help her. Will one of her greatest triumphs be achieved as she learns to believe in herself? For only then can she truly see all of the wondrous things that life has to offer.

Opening her eyes, Brianna gazed into a clear blue sky illuminated by warm, hazy rays of sunlight. She slowly turned her head to look around. She was lying on a carpet of soft, green grass. All around her she heard the sweet, cheerful songs of birds as a playful breeze rumpled her long black hair.
Where am I?
She tried to raise her head but a hot, sharp pain shot through it.
Ow! I have one heck of a headache!
Gently, she lay her head back down. As she stretched into a more comfortable position, she noticed the clothes she was wearing; a white, ruffled blouse and a long, purple skirt. She was vaguely confused but couldn’t figure out why. Suddenly a strong urge to sleep overcame her. Closing her eyes, she listened to the birds and felt the warm sun soaking into her skin. The soft breeze caressed her cheeks and pressed the tendrils of her hair against her forehead. Gently, she was lulled back to sleep.
Brianna was awakened by a swishing sound nearby.
What was that?
She turned her head to see a woman with long, blonde hair and a robe the color of fresh, pink rose petals walking through the grass with two little blue gnarled creatures at her side. She tried to jump up, to run away, but another hot flash of pain in her head quickly halted her efforts.
Oh God! What are those things?
In terror, she watched as the woman looked over at her.
“Oh my goodness! My dear, are you ill? Where did you come from?” The woman walked over to Brianna and bent down, her brow knit with concern. “You needn’t be afraid, dear. I am Libban.”
The two little blue creatures hopped around Brianna, sniffing and snorting as they nudged her arms and legs.
“Stop! Please!” She begged. “Where…where am I?
Libban spoke sharply to the little blue creatures and they ran to her side, looking at Brianna from behind her skirt.
“Who are you?” Brianna said, her voice shaking.
“I am Libban, Keeper of the Land.”
“Keeper of what land? Where am I?” Brianna managed to whisper.
“Why, you are in Yashire!” Libban crouched next to Brianna.
“What is Yashire?” Brianna asked, tears stinging her eyes.
“You must have had a hard fall, my dear. Do you remember how you got here? What is your name?” Libban surveyed her intently with crystalline blue eyes.
“I…I’m not sure!” Brianna answered.
What is my name? Oh, God! What is happening?
“Here, let me help you. Would you like to come to my home? Maybe you will remember as we walk.” Libban stood and offered her hand to help Brianna up.
Carefully, Brianna obliged, inching herself up slowly because of the throbbing in her head.
They walked through the meadow and up a small hill to a large mansion. The two little blue creatures chased each other through the meadow ahead of Brianna and Libban and disappeared into the mansion. The windows in the mansion were open and plump white doves perched on the sills amongst brilliant red, white and orange flowing vines that climbed the stone walls.
This place is huge! It looks like a castle or something!
Brianna gazed at the huge leafy trees all over the grounds. Roses bloomed among the deep purple violets growing thick in the flower gardens in front of the mansion.
I’ve never seen anything like this in my life! Wait…how do I know that? Where am I? What is this place? Am I hallucinating?
Brianna stopped walking, her thoughts racing.
Who am I? How can I not know who I am?
Panic gripped her.
“What is this place called?” she asked, her throat tightening.
“This land is called Yashire. Please come in and sit down. Maybe you will begin to remember if you relax a bit.” Libban answered, motioning for her to follow through the arched front doorway.

Maris by: Isaiyan Morrison

Title: Maris
Author: Isaiyan Morrison
Series: The Brotherhood Files (This book can be read on its own however, it is part of The Deamhan Chronicles.)
Genre: Paranormal
Publisher: Self Published
Release Date: Mar 10 2015
Edition/Formats Available In: eBook & Print
Blurb/Synopsis:
She gave me her blood, and my life changed forever.
Anastasia. My sire. The only influential figure in my already-fragile life. She did this to me. She caused all the pain and suffering. There was a time I believed I owed her everything. After all, she gave me immortality and the never-ending thirst for the energy contained in the blood of my victims.
But now vampires hunt me and the humans want to use me as their personal weapon. They believe I’m some kind of apotropaic figurine that can damn all Deamhan and force us back into hell where we belong. Me? I just want to live. I just want to be Maris. That way, the only one I can damn is myself.

I knew my name, Maris, and that my mother worked as a prostitute in a famous brothel located in the Irish slums just outside of London, but I didn't how I ended up in this unknown location.
Every thought about my mother started off the same. She tried to abort her pregnancy because it interfered with her ‘job.’ After my birth she kept me locked up in the corner of the room in the solid brass baby cradle that one of her clients gave her as payment. She tended to me as least as she could and when I was old enough to walk and understand what exactly was going on, she locked me inside her closet where I remained until sunrise.
With her death from cholera a year ago, I found myself forced to earn my way.  I had only two options: follow in her footsteps or leave the whorehouse to fend for myself. I pissed myself at the thought of trying to survive out there; in the world, all alone. At least I knew that I would have two hot meals, my mother's old ragged bed, and a room of my own if I stayed.
I made a promise to myself. I would take over my mother's client list. I would stay as long as I had to. I would save up as much money as I could and eventually leave for greener pastures. I struggled, though, as the years passed. Some of her clients enjoyed me while others couldn't handle the fact that I, a post-puberty teenager, would submit myself to that line of work. But I did and there were nights that I wished I hadn't. I had reached the midpoint of my savings goal when my life changed forever. I was almost there. I almost made it.
One night three large men with sharp teeth stormed into my room. I didn't know who they were or what they wanted with me. One of them grabbed me by the shoulders and pushed me violently against the wall, demanding that I tell him my name. When I answered his question with a question of my own, he smacked me, slicing the left side of my face. That was when things began to go from scary to downright crazy. He placed his mouth over my opened flesh and began to suck the blood from my wound. That was the last thing I remembered before I blacked out and awoke to three individuals—two females and one male—standing over me.

Saving Faithless Creek by: Andrew Grey

Title: Saving Faithless Creek
Author: Andrew Grey
Series: Stand Alone
Genre:  M/M Contemporary Western
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
Release Date: June 2015
Edition/Formats Available In: eBook & Print
Blurb/Synopsis:
Blair Montgomery is sent to Newton, Montana, to purchase a ranch and some land for his father. It’s a trip he doesn't want to make. But his father paid for his college education in exchange for Blair working for him in his casinos, so Blair has no choice. When he finds out he’ll be dealing with Royal, the man who bullied him in high school, he is shocked. Then Blair is surprised when he finds that Royal’s time in the Marines has changed him to the point where Blair could be attracted to him… if he’s willing to take that chance.

Royal’s life hasn’t been a bed of roses. He saw combat in the military that left him scarred, and not just on the outside. When he inherits his father’s ranch, he discovers his father wasn't a good manager and the ranch is in trouble. The sale of land would put them back on good footing, but he is suspicious of Blair’s father’s motives and with good reason.  The attraction between them is hard for either to ignore, but it could all evaporate once the land deal is sealed.

“That would be nice. This land deserves to be worked and not just let to go to the wind.” Hiram drank some more of his coffee and then set the mug on the table once again. Slowly he used his walker to stand. “Come on, young man. Let me show you the rest of the place.”
“Are you sure? I can take a look around.”
Hiram laughed. “Son, I doubt you’d know what you were looking at. No offense meant, but you came from the city. Besides, I’m not in my grave yet. This thing is to make sure that I don’t fall or something dumb—you know, like in those commercials they have to prey on the fears of old people like me.” Hiram shook his head. “I actually thought about getting one of them alert things, but who they gonna call out here?” He laughed.
“I suppose,” Blair agreed. “If you’re up for it, I’d love for you to show me your ranch.” He walked ahead and opened the front door, holding it for Hiram.
“There’s a jacket hanging in that closet. Would you get it for me? Getting old means you’re cold all the time. Maybe I should go into one of them homes in Florida. Least then I wouldn’t have to worry none about being cold all the damn time.”
Blair got the jacket and waited while Hiram put it on. Then he followed him out of the house and closed the door. Hiram walkered his way across the yard to the barn. “We built this one in ’62. You can see we built it to last, not like these pole buildings they put up today.” Blair pulled the door open, and Hiram stepped inside. Blair had expected an old barn full of stuff and collections of crap, but it was as clean as a whistle. Dust motes floated in the air, but the stalls were completely empty, the concrete floor covered in dust. A few times Blair caught the scent of horse, but it seemed more like an illusion, like Blair was wishing it was there.
“Uncle Hiram!” Someone called from outside.
“I’m in here, boy!” Hiram called back.
Blair turned and saw Royal striding down the center of the barn toward where they stood.
“Is he dragging you all over the place?” Royal snapped as he stared at Blair.
“Goodness, no. I was showing him around,” Hiram said. “You just cool your jets.” Blair almost laughed as Hiram put Royal in his place. The scowl Royal was wearing didn’t dissipate, but he quieted. “I take it you know each other. I’d ask if you were friends, but Royal doesn’t have any of those.”
“Uncle Hiram,” Royal said more gently this time.
“I ain’t his real uncle.” Hiram smiled as he turned toward Royal with a sigh.
“Thank God for that,” Royal said. “If you were, you’d be a complete pile of useless shit like the rest of them.”
“What brings you by with such a sunny attitude?” Hiram asked with a snort.
“I figured he was heading your way, and I wanted to make sure everything was all right.”
“I’m fine. Blair let me run on about how things used to be, and he made me some real coffee. Now I’m just showing him around a bit.” Hiram leaned so he could see out the door. “How’d you get here?”
“On Marvel,” Royal said.
“Good. Now that you’re here, I’m wondering if you’ll do me a favor. Do you think you could take him out and show him some of the grazing land?”
Royal hesitated. Blair could tell Royal was no more thrilled about this request than Blair was. Though why Royal would be uncomfortable was beyond Blair. Royal wasn’t the one who’d been shoved in the lockers and threatened to the point that he’d jumped at every loud noise and lived in mortal fear of gym class each day.
“If you like,” Royal said. “We can go back to the house and get the ATVs.”
Hiram humphed. “You know you can’t see the land on anything but a horse. Those ATV things are a complete menace. I know it’s the way of the future, but they’re terrible and smell something awful. I swear they flavor the beef.” He was on a roll.
“Never mind, then,” Blair said. He wasn’t really interested in getting up on a horse with Royal. He and horses didn’t get along particularly well, and then to be out away from people? Alone? It was nearly terrifying.
“No, I’ll take him.” Royal agreed. Blair could imagine Royal rubbing his hands together with an evil grin, like in the cartoons. “As long as we don’t go too far, Marvel will be fine.”
“Excellent,” Hiram said and turned around, then started walkering himself toward the door to the barn. “I’ll go back in the house. You two take a good look around and then come on back.”
Blair watched until Hiram made it to his door and then turned to Royal. “Let’s get this over with.”
“You don’t have to go if you don’t want to,” Royal said with a challenge in his voice. “I have plenty to do and didn’t plan on this, but since Uncle Hiram asked….”
Blair looked at the huge horse standing near the empty paddock. “Let’s go.” He knew he was probably going to regret this in a big way. But seeing the land would help him justify whatever price he was able to negotiate, because his father would say he overpaid even if he got the land for free.
Royal walked over to the horse. Blair wondered how he was going to get on—Marvel was tall and looked strong as hell. Black as midnight, he was stunning even to Blair’s untrained eye. “I’m going to mount and then you mount behind me. Just watch what I do.”
“Okay,” Blair whispered. This was going to be a disaster, he knew it. Royal approached Marvel and put his foot in the stirrups. The jeans tightened around his legs and ass, and all thought left Blair. Royal mounted and sat on Marvel, then turned to look at him. All Blair could think was how stunning both man and horse looked at that moment. The image was simple and perfect, with the mountains in the background, the impatient fire in Royal’s eyes, the way his lips hung open ever so slightly. God, the man could take Hollywood by storm if he wanted to. Too bad Royal would probably have a fit if Blair took out his phone to snap a picture.

Sex God by: Matthew Armstrong w/ Interview

Title: Sex God
Author: Matthew Armstrong
Series: Stand Alone
Genre: Erotica
Publisher: Be Your Potential Books
Release Date: Mar 28 2015
Edition/Formats: eBook & Print

Blurb/Synopsis:
Unfulfilled in his marriage and life, Alex Sterling makes an indecent proposal to his wife, Angela, which sets them off on an erotic adventure of self-discovery, revealing dark and repressed parts of themselves. On the verge of losing everything that is most important to him, Alex is a man in early life crisis, playing a high-stakes game and going to extreme measures to save what he values most. Is he going through a mental breakdown or is this some sort of spiritual transformation? He has no idea as his grasp on reality crumbles and all his worst fears are inevitably realized.

“You know I am feeling this immense appreciation for you right now,” Angela says as she snakes across the bedroom and climbs onto the bed on her hands and knees.
I smile. “I’m glad, but it was you who put the effort in. If only all my clients were like you.”
“What, don’t all your clients get results like this?” “No, you are one in a hundred.” “Why is that? Is it my genetics do you think?”
“Maybe partly, but the biggest deciding factor is having a compelling reason why. It’s a single-mindedness – a focus, you know.”
Angela prowls across to my side of the bed and pulls the covers off to reveal my morning glory. God, she looks sexy. She grasps her hand around the base of my cock and squeezes. I shift off my elbow and onto my back. She then steps her knees in between my legs, pushing them apart, and with her other hand pulls her damp hair over to one side. Lowering her head and opening her mouth she engulfs my whole cock, clamping her lips tightly and sucking hard. I groan as she slowly lifts her head while still maintaining suction until her lips have covered my entire length and slip off the tip.
Angela looks at me momentarily and smiles before going again and this time vigorously sucking up and down and swirling her tongue around my now fully engorged penis. I gasp at the intensity, which makes her suck harder. Her left hand finds my balls and she tickles her fingers around them and down to my perineum, which is more than I can take and I unload into her mouth. She swallows quickly and continues sucking slowly and softly. My body quivers and shakes – my breathing uncontrollable – until the last drop of come has entered her mouth and she finally releases me from her clutches. A look of satisfaction is on her face as she reaches over and lifts a glass of water from the bedside table and drinks.
“That was unexpected” are the first words to find coherent form and exit my mouth. Angela always had a talent for blow jobs. She uses a lot of suction and can make it incredibly intense.
“Just a token of my appreciation,” she replies.
In this moment it feels like we have an amazing relationship and I almost forget that Marco Carvalho even exists. But he is actually the catalyst for all this. But what if Angela had never met him in the first place, then she would have never had anyone to compare me to or measure me up against. Would I then be enough for her? So many what ifs! Better not to focus on them and stay in the moment. But my mind is taken to her imminent encounter with him tonight and then that is all I can think about. Will she suck him just like she did to me?

.: A Gothic Novella :.

Sometimes, life and love can follow the most obscure paths, just as they did for Elisa.
Her life becomes a dark, cold, lonely cage the day the devil takes her as his wife. He robs her of almost everything she holds dear: her health, her wealth and what is left of her family.
Trapped between the nuances of life and beyond-life, Elisa finds herself struggling for a better tomorrow. With her health deteriorating, how will she summon the courage and strength to stand her ground? And how far will she go in the pursuit of a dream?
Embark with Elisa on this puzzling Gothic adventure set in the late Victorian era, between the world of the Living and the picturesque, melancholic Duskland.

Dr. Charles knew Leonhard too well; he knew his friend had been gravely affected by all the abrupt changes since Elisa had entered their lives. It was too much for him to take at once. He wanted to spare his friend from what he was about to reveal.
“Leo.”
“Just go ahead, Charles. Tell me!”
He paused, gazing at Leonhard again. “It is about Elisa.”
“What about her? Something about her illness?”
“Indeed.” Dr. Charles’ countenance was filled with great concern. “I think I figured out why she keeps relapsing, why her illness doesn’t seem to go away.”
“What is it, Charles?” He narrowed his eyes, anxious.
“Listen, I have noticed that lately, sometimes, Elisa doesn’t reflect in mirrors.”
“Wh…what?” Leonhard could hardly believe what he had just heard. “What are you telling me, Charles?”
“At dinner tonight she didn’t reflect in the tray and sometimes her image is completely gone from the mirror behind your dining place. Believe me, I saw your reflection, mine and the Siamese sisters’ but not Elisa’s!”

Genre: Paranormal/Urban Fantasy/"Horromance" (because it's a mix of horror and romance)
Publisher: Self Published
Release Date: June 11 2015
Edition/Formats: eBook & Print
Blurb/Synopsis:
It’s good to be the Queen…
Having ascended the throne of Hell, Madison Wescott is finally able to breathe a sigh of relief. Though she has embraced her demonic nature, she has ensured the safety of everyone she loves. With both Micah and Nix at her side, she wields more power than she could have ever imagined.
But not even the throne is safe when you rule in Hell.
In the wake of a failed assassination attempt, Madison learns about a realm of the damned older than Hell itself. A fierce and powerful incubus vows to escape his imprisonment there — and his efforts are weakening the bonds that hold him and countless other monsters at bay. With no plan and nowhere else to turn, Madison contacts an unlikely source for help. But whose side is he really on? Will he help preserve her reign, or bring about Hell’s downfall?

Choose your partnerships carefully…

Accented voice, his lilt flowed over her like rich wine, flavorful, intoxicating, and promised sinful delights. “I am Aramayis. I governor this realm. You may swear fealty to me now.”
She would swear fealty to no one. Not Hell like Micah wanted and damn sure not this unknown creature. “You’re an incubus.”
“You are a succubus.” He trailed his fingers along her cheek, and Madison made no effort to stop his forwardness. “Although, not very powerful. Pity. You will need power to survive our world.” He circled her. “Maybe you can persuade me to protect you.”
As if I’d stoop that low!
“You have fantastic lines, great breasts”—he met her eyes briefly as he continued to prowl about her—“hips a man can grip to anchor himself between your thighs.” He stopped behind her, his breath puffing against the back of her ear, much too close for her peace of mind. She also recognized it as a tactical move to dominate her. “And a fantastic ass.” His fingers slid through her hair and down her spine
She turned to face him just as his hand would’ve landed on her ass.
He smiled, devastating her for a heartbeat with his beauty. I want to fuck him. I need to—the asshole is mind-fucking me with his mojo.
The stretch of his power scared her a little. She couldn’t enthrall without touch. That he could alarmed her.
Madison laughed. “You’re good. I almost wanted to screw you for a moment.”
A smug tilt hit one corner of his lips. Classy. Real classy. He bragged without saying a word. That took talent, not to mention big-fucking balls.
“That is why I govern this realm.” Aramayis swept his hand to indicate the cavern at large.
He is much too arrogant.
Agreed, said her inner demon. Time to bring him down a notch…or ten. Usha giggled like she’d enjoy his fall from the pedestal he’d placed himself upon.
Madison lifted her hand and sifted her fingers through his hair. Cool tresses heated her fingertips. Everything about him must be designed to emit pheromones because she could feel them leeching into her flesh through his hair. Humanity would never be able to withstand his alluring vibe.
“Can you tone down your incubus elixir?”
“If I want.” He watched her, his gaze calculated, and his mouth turned into an eternal smirk. “I rarely want.” Double innuendo there, she bet.
“I’m Lynx.” His smile fell as his unnamed companions put some distance between them. At least they recognized her deadliness. “I also own the power of Pandora.”

Will remembered that day in Tijuana, Mexico. He had been working at a small local restaurant owned by an enigmatic and powerful woman named Rosa Chavez. Rosa knew what he was before he even had a clue. Rosa befriended him, protected him, and taught him about other realities he thought were only from fairytales. He soon learned those stories were not meant to lull children to sleep, but were meant to be warnings of evil that truly existed.
"What were you doing in Mexico?" Isabel asked.
"I left my home in Greece. I was afraid for my family and I didn't want to bring them any harm. I bought a one-way ticket to the farthest place money could get me and that was Mexico. I wandered around for a while until I met Rosa. She took me in."
"From what danger were you running?" Isabel's voice had softened.
"Demons, but I didn't know it then. It felt like I was being drawn to them and them to me. I was afraid. I didn't know what else to do. I thought that if I could get away, my problems would be over." Will's chest felt heavy. He recalled the last day he saw his mother and how she looked at him. Moro mou, my baby, she lovingly said to him. Being his mother's only child, they had an incredibly strong bond. Although he had half-siblings from his step-father, he was his mother's angel.
When he was a child, she used to tell him a story. It was a story she only shared with him. He thought it was make-believe, a story his mother wove to keep his attention and spark his imagination.
It was a dark night, full of clouds and howling winds, she would begin with a whisper. The night air should have been warm and thick but, that night, it was bitterly cold. His mother would pause and rub her arms, as if memories of that night brought back the same chills to her bones. Our streets were deserted and I was the only one outside, but I was determined to get away. Papa, your grandfather, forbade me to see Avel, the boy I had fallen in love with, but my mind was made up. I was not about to be kept from my true love, his mother would say with a smile that made her whole face shine.
I was walking, lost in my thoughts, dreaming about marrying Avel and how Papa would grow to love him, when a dark shroud came over me. I couldn't breathe, I couldn't scream, I couldn't move. His mother would stop and grip the rosary beads she always wore around her neck and kiss the small cross dangling near her chest. I felt fear like I've never felt before. I felt like my very soul was being extinguished. I cried and I pleaded and I prayed for salvation. It felt like hours had gone by and I knew I was dying. I was losing hope for myself, but I couldn't give up, not yet. I started to pray for you, moro mou. If I could not be saved, I prayed that God would save you and the life you had yet to live.
Will remembered asking his mother, I was with you? He had said it with the innocence of a child filled with wonder at having been a real life participant in a story.
Yes, little one, you were, she would respond with a bright smile and point to her belly.
He remembered laughing, thinking how silly it was that she carried him in the apron she always wore over her dresses. What happened next, momma?
A light brighter than the sun appeared right in front of me. It grew and grew, then suddenly disappeared. I felt the black shroud start to melt off me, then I saw a man coming toward me. He was tall with hair black as night. His eyes… his eyes were like liquid pools of sunshine. He was like a god. His mother would look up towards the heavens before continuing, He pulled me out of the darkness. He saved us.
His mother would always end the story by grabbing his face and giving him a big kiss on the forehead and saying, Angelos, an angel saved us. His light surrounded me. I felt it inside my heart, warming me like hot milk on a cold day. I felt the light reviving my soul, charging my energy! I saw the light come out of my skin, golden and bright, she would say with vigor. The light became a part of you, too. You are part of the light. You are an angel, my son.
Oh momma, he would say as he embraced his beautiful mother as tight as he could.
Will snapped out of his reverie. "I'm what you could call a Warden… for demons." He paused. "At least it's what I've become. Baja was not a lair." Will looked at Isabel. His gaze was steady, but not in defiance. "It was a prison. I contained captured demons until the Carrions could take them."
